AFRICA/NIGERIA - Muhammadu Buhari elected President; Bishops invite to respect the result

Abuja (Agenzia Fides) - Muhammadu Buhari has been elected President of Nigera having obtained 15.4 million votes against 13.3 obtained by the outgoing Head of State, Goodluck Jonathan. The latter recognized Buhari’s victory and invited his supporters to accept the result.
Immediately after the announcement of the results by the Independent Electoral Commission, the Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria appealed to the supporters of the two candidates for calm and to respect the election result. The President of the Episcopal Conference, Archbishop of Jos, His Exc. Mgr. Ignatius Kaigama, asked the security forces to remain on alert in order to contain possible post-election violence and new attacks by Boko Haram. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 01/04/2015)
