AFRICA/ANGOLA – Angola, a nation of contradictions

Tuesday, 24 March 2015

Luanda (Agenzia Fides) - Angola is a nation of contradictions. Children die because they do not have medicines. In many communities there are no schools, mosquito nets and toilets. The only sources where one can get drinking water are polluted streams. On the streets of the Country one meets skeletal children who are undernourished. It is at the same time the second largest oil producer Country in the continent, rich in diamonds and where many billionaires live, but there are also children who die of hunger and malaria. Angola is the first Country in the world where there is the highest rate of deaths of children under 5 years of age. Because of malnutrition over a quarter of Angolan children has rickets or developmental delay. The life of a pregnant woman over 35 is at risk for the duration of childbirth, and only between 40 and 50 percent of the population has access to health care. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 24/03/2015)
