Sendai (Agenzia Fides) - Natural disasters are destroying the globe, both in Western Countries and in the poorest Countries in the world. Over the past decade there have been several natural disasters like the tsunami in Sri Lanka, the earthquake in Haiti, Katrina Hurricane in the United States, the cyclical floods in Pakistan and Bangladesh. World leaders are meeting in Sendai, Japan, from March 14 to 18, on the occasion of the Third World Conference of the United Nations to discuss reducing disaster risk. Representatives of CBM Italy, non-profit organization will take part to ensure that the issue of the reduction of natural disasters is inserted in the new Millennium Development Goals, with particular attention to the issue of people with disabilities.
In the world, in fact, there are 1 billion people with disabilities, 15% of the world population, and 80% live in developing Countries. A note sent to Agenzia Fides by CBM Italy, says: "People with disabilities are among those most affected during emergencies, often they do not have access to humanitarian aid; a person in a wheelchair, for example, not always manages to reach camps where food kits and basic necessities are distributed".
