AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Meeting of Bishops Emeritus

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - From March 23 to 27, the first Meeting of Bishops Emeritus of Latin America and the Caribbean, organized by the Department of Ecclesial Communion and Dialogue of the Episcopal Council Latin American Bishops (CELAM) will be held at the headquarters of the Episcopal Conference of Colombia, in Bogota. "The Church intends to offer special attention to those Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean who, after years of pastoral work and leadership of the diocese, have retired", explains the note sent to Fides by CELAM.
The purpose of the meeting is to promote a meeting and fraternal dialogue to deepen the themes of the Episcopate and formation, and share the experience of the pastoral reality in which they were and still are committed to. A group of Bishops Eneritus of Latin America in fact continue to be active in the Christian communities and serve as pastors, assistant pastors or are even missionaries. According to the Statistical Yearbook of the Church 2012, the Bishops of the Catholic Church are 5,133; Bishops Emeritus are 1,547. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 04/03/2015)
