Wednesday, 25 February 2015

San Cristobal (Agenzia Fides) - Unasur (Unión de Naciones Suramericanas) condems the violent death of Venezuelan student Klivert Roa, and reaffirms its willingness to find democratic and peaceful solutions regarding the tense situation that the country lives. The statement, sent to Fides, refers to the murder of a high school student in the state of Tachira which happened yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, February 24, during a demonstration.
The President of the Student Movement told the press: "there have been demonstrations for 6 days and 6 people have died so far". Even the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has expressed "deep concern" about the political situation in Venezuela.
The state of Táchira, last year had become the center of protests against the government of Maduro and against the economic crisis affecting Venezuela. The toll is 43 dead. The Church is strongly committed to putting an end to violence and seek a solution (see Fides 12/01/2015).
Meanwhile Fides continues to receive a large number of reports that highlight the tension which people live due to famine and lack of basic necessities. The international press criticizes the President because he merely acts against the opposition without solving the main problems of the country. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 25/02/2015)
