Addis Abeba (Agenzia Fides) - Berhanu Tamene Woldeyohannes has been appointed head of the office for relations between SECAM (Symposium of Bishops’ Conferences of Africa and Madagascar) and the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. According to a statement sent to Fides, Mr Woldeyohannes, who is Programme Officer of the SECAM Department for Justice, Development and Government, will have the specific task of facilitating “the signing of an Entente Cordial Memorandum for a SECAM Status of Observer to the African Union”.
“The decision is in agreement with the goals of the Catholic Church in Africa to contribute towards the building up of an Africa, united, integrated, strong, democratic, well governed, developed, prosperous, righteous, peaceful and respectful”.
In January Cardinal Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel, Archbishop of Addis Abeba, said he was committed to working to ensure that SECAM, together with the Association of Members of Bishops’ Conferences of East Africa (AMECEA), obtains the Status of Observer to the AU.
