ASIA/IRAQ - The Chaldean Archbishop of Kirkuk promotes a blood drive for the victims of terrorism

Thursday, 12 February 2015

Kirkuk (Agenzia Fides) - An extraordinary blood drive campaign was held with the intention of showing solidarity towards the victims of jihadist terrorism and also with the armed forces and Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers who protect the city from the attacks of the militia of Daesh (Arabic acronym used to refer to the self-styled Islamic State). This is the idea promoted in recent days by Mgr. Yousif Thomas Mirkis, OP, Archbishop of Kirkuk of the Chaldeans, who on Tuesday, February 10 set up a blood drive at the Cathedral, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. "The initiative - explained Archbishop Yousif Thomas in a statement sent to Agenzia Fides - wants to express our closeness to the soldiers willing to sacrifice their lives to protect us and all the victims of terrorism. This is also a strong sign of our unity, nourished by the love of God".
On January 30, the militias of Daesh had attempted a surprise attack on Kirkuk. The jihad offensive was then rejected by the Kurdish Peshmerga militia, who for months have been defending the city, considered strategic for the control of oil resources. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 12/02/2015)
