Havana (Agenzia Fides) - The proposal of the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) to reform the armed forces, police and intelligence services of the state, has created a lot of confusion, especially in the political group of government, that considers it a weakening of national security.
The statement issued last night and sent to Fides from Havana, home of peace talks between the government and the FARC, informs that among the requests there is the reduction in defense spending and the redrafting of the armed forces. In the statement presented by the leaders of the guerrilla group, there is also the request of the opening of the archives of the army, police and intelligence services.
From the latest reports on behalf of the local media, we learn that public opinion and Colombian politics is divided, as some claim that this is not a topic to be discussed, while others believe that the military should however decrease in post-conflict. Also according to Colombian newspapers, in recent weeks, optimism has increased on behalf of public opinion on the peace process. The theme of the unilateral ceasefire, imposed on December 20, 2014 remains under discussion. The armed conflict in Colombia, which lasted about 50 years, caused more than 220,000 dead and 5.3 million displaced, according to official figures. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 10/02/2015)
