AMERICA/MEXICO - The Bishop of Zacatecas: "People die every day"

Monday, 9 February 2015

Zacatecas (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishop of Zacatecas, His Exc. Mgr. Sigifredo Noriega Barceló, has again deplored the violence that has intensified since the beginning of the year in Fresnillo, where dead bodies are found every day and armed clashes between rival groups of organized crime are registered.
The note sent to Fides informs that during the pastoral visit to El Mineral last week, the Bishop visited places which are completely abandoned by the police. "Those people are alone", said Mgr. Noriega Barceló referring to El Mesquite, located 30 kilometers northeast of the capital. The Bishop emphasized the existing violence in the big cities of his diocese, where there is a war between cartels for the control of the territory, and this not only affects the lives of the population but also determines a climate of insecurity and mistrust.
"We know what kind of people cause the violence that takes place in our area", said the Bishop, who also thanked the police for its efforts in maintaining the necessary calm for everyday life.
The area of Zacatecas in central Mexico, suffers the violence of organized group crime, but it is also one of the areas where there is a very high percentage of young people who abandon school. The "Programa Escuela Segura" is working to understand the causes of this abandonment, which appears to be related to violence rather than social or economic problems.
