ASIA/CHINA - The ancient church of the diocese of Ning Bo will soon return to being the symbol of the city

Ning Bo (Agenzia Fides) - By the end of 2015 the old church of the diocese of Ning Bo, in the province of Zhe Jiang, originally dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows and then to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, will return to its former glory after the fire on July 28, 2014. The church is not only loved by Catholics for its rich history and for the testimony of faith, but it is also a symbol for the whole city of Ning Bo, especially for young people, who often choose the church to take pictures of their wedding day or during special occasions.
According to information gathered by Agenzia Fides, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage of the Chinese government has approved the Restoration Project presented on January 26 by experts: architects, archaeologists and representatives of the Catholic Church. The Project includes the restoration of the partially destroyed church, the restoration of the bell tower and the crypt where Mgr. Paul Marie Reynased, MEP, Apostolic Vicar from 1884 to 1926 is buried, and the renovation of the electrical system.
Built in Gothic style in 1872, dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, this church was the cathedral of the Apostolic Vicariate of Zhe Jiang. Closed in 1963 and reopened on December 24, 1980, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In 2006 it was recognized by the State Council as a national archaeological site of utmost importance to protect. (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 04/02/2015)
