Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) - Roads, bridges, schools, infrastructure of all kinds, thousands of hectares of land have been destroyed, livestock drowned: this is the devasting situation caused by the torrential rains that have been hitting Malawi and Mozambique for over a month. In a statement sent to Agenzia Fides by the Spanish organization Ayuda en Acción, there are now over 300 000 people affected by floods in the two African Countries, and this figure is expected to further increase. To address this emergency, the NGO has launched the campaign 'Emergency in Malawi and Mozambique'. The NGO also noted that the number of people affected in Malawi is around 200 thousand units and Mozambique approximately 130 thousand units; while the displaced are respectively between 85/100 thousand and over 50 thousand. There are still several people missing in Malawi as well as hundreds of people continue to be isolated, without food, water, sanitation or electricity. In addition, mosquito breeding, disease vectors such as malaria, which have also contaminated water wells make the already precarious situation even more difficult to handle.
