AFRICA/EGYPT - Coptic Associations are working on a document on the rights of citizenship

Friday, 23 January 2015

Cairo (Agenzia Fides) - Associations and movements animated by Coptic Christians who are part of the "Coptic Advisory Council" have announced the imminent publication of a document on the rights of citizenship. The text aims to outline a road map for the protection and defense of the rights of citizenship that provides, not only to Christians, tools and advice to expose and combat the legacy of sectarian discrimination on ethnic or religious basis, active at different levels in Egyptian society. Experts and analysts belonging to the Coptic Orthodox Church, the Coptic Catholic Church and the Coptic Protestant community have helped in the drafting of the document.
The text - say local sources contacted by Agenzia Fides - will provide a mapping of even subtle forms of discrimination that occur in the legal, administrative, media, cultural and public education field. Objectives or possible practical applications of the document will be exposed during a press conference, announced for the first few days of February.
The "Coptic Advisory Board" was established in August 2012 as an instrument of coordination between groups and associations inspired by secular Copts, with the intention of combining the intentions and finding forms of cooperation to deal with civil, social and political issues.
