AMERICA/NICARAGUA - Pastoral letter: "Some people are more interested in profit than man himself"

Tuesday, 20 January 2015

Matagalpa (Agenzia Fides) - On the feast of the Patron of the diocese, Our Lord of Esquipulas, the Bishop of Matagalpa (Nicaragua), His Exc. Mgr. Rolando José Álvarez Lagos, called on the Catholic community to live coherently in a society that proposes "having" before being. In his pastoral letter the Bishop also presents a number of criticisms concerning the exercise of power and human ambition before money.
"In Nicaragua, some people are more interested in money than justice; to economy than environment", wrote the Bishop. "They are more interested in profit than man himself; they are more interested in mega projects than respect for history, identity, culture and faith. They do not care if their bread is earned rightly or has the price of corruption". Mgr. Alvarez recalled that civic values teach us to respect "our land, our country, laws and the Constitution".
In his pastoral letter the Bishop recalls that love begins with respect for others, "even when they do not think like us". "We must learn to speak civilly, politely and fairly. Giving foundation to what we believe in, and highlighting our differences, we must be able to build a more human, more just, more fraternal society".
Nicaragua is still experiencing a climate of tension due to the construction of the Grand Canal transoceanic mega project (see Fides 24/11/2014; 25/11/2014; 13/01/2015). (CE) (Agenzia Fides 20/01/2015)
