AMERICA/MEXICO – The Bishops of Guerrero appreciate the good will of the army

Friday, 16 January 2015

Acapulco (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of the four dioceses of the area of Guerrero have positively judged the army's decision to give free access to military facilities to families looking for the 42 students who disappeared from Iguala (see Fides 10/10/2014).
The letter sent from a local source to Agenzia Fides reports the press conference which was held yesterday, January 15, by the Bishops of the four dioceses of Guerrero: Mgr. Carlos Garfias Merlos (Acapulco), Mgr. Alejo Zavala Castro (Chilpancingo-Chilapa), Mgr. Dagoberto Sosa Arriaga (Tlapa) and Maximino Martínez Miranda (Ciudad Altamirano).
"There is no doubt that this gesture will help eliminate the mistrust that some social groups have towards the Mexican army. It is a gesture of good will, and we must understand that there is the intention to give us confidence towards our soldiers", said the Archbishop of Acapulco, Mgr. Carlos Garfias Merlos.
Some groups had accused the military of complicity regarding the missing students. The four Bishops of Guerrero recognized that in the area there is a social and political crisis that affects everyone. In this regard, they have offered to establish an open, transparent and inclusive dialogue among all the groups and representatives of the federal and state government, in order to overcome the crisis in the area.
