AMERICA/BRAZIL – Foreign missionaries in Brazil: socio-cultural immersion before the mission

Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - On December 12 with the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, n.112 edition of the Course of Missionary initiation of the Intercultural Formation Center (Cenfi) concluded. Organized by the Missionary Cultural Center (CCM) in Brasilia, the course lasts three months and aims to introduce foreign missionaries (sent by congregations, dioceses, or other organizations) in the reality of the mission in Brazil, before starting their service .
According to the note sent to Agenzia Fides by the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) of Brazil, the course was attended by 24 missionaries (men and women) from 13 countries: Indonesia, India, South Korea, Vietnam, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Poland. The course program included the systematic teaching of the Portuguese language; the stay with families to get to know the local reality; the study of society and of the Church in Brazil; the exchange of experiences among the participants.
CCM highlighted that: "These missionaries were able, with great maturity, patience and good relations among them, to successfully accomplish a process of acculturation, of immersion in the socio-cultural world of Brazil and in the path of the Church, sharing the riches of its Christian identity and culture".
