ASIA/IRAQ - President Barzani listens to minorities: need to review the composition of the Electoral Commission

Saturday, 13 December 2014

Erbil (Agenzia Fides) - The President of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan Massoud Barzani has expressed his full support with regards to the requests to review the composition of the Electoral Commission also strongly expressed by parliamentarians and local political Christians. On Thursday, December 11, in a meeting with a delegation of Armenian, Chaldean, Syrian, Turkmen, Communist and Islamist political leaders, President Barzani welcomed and endorsed the criticisms which they addressed regarding the criteria of choosing the members of the Central Electoral Commission, monopolized by majority Kurdish parties that have divided the available places among themselves, without taking into consideration all political components, religious and ethnic minorities in the area subjected to the regional government.
The story throws a veil on the reputation of the democratic Parliament of Iraqi Kurdistan and its real capacity to represent all components of the population, without discrimination and in recognition of the full equality of rights and duties for all citizens.
The meeting also proposed the appointment of a guarantor for the rights of the various national and religious components in Iraq. President Barzani - reports ankawa.com - has committed himself personally to find a "satisfactory solution", which will satisfy the requests which have come from all sectors of the local population not represented by Kurdish political blocs.
