AFRICA/MALAWI - Appeal of "Justice and Peace" to international donors: "Do not abandon us in time of need"

Wednesday, 10 December 2014

Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) - "Do not abandon Malawi at the time of such a serious situation of need". This is the appeal launched by the Episcopal Commission "Justice and Peace" of Malawi to the Country's international partners, who have blocked sending economic aid because of the "Cash Gate" scandal, due to the embezzlement of foreign funds from local authorities (see Fides 23/09/2014 and 12/11/2014).
The appeal is contained in the statement "Not yet the Malawi we need", where "Justice and Peace" points out that "the government of Malawi needs the financial resources offered by bilateral and multilateral partners, to pursue its development agenda, while it is cleaning up and strengthening its system of financial management".
"More has to be done and in a radically different and effective way, to make Malawi a better place for all", the statement said, noting that the quality of services such as education, health, water supply has been severely compromised in recent years to the detriment of the poor who cannot afford privatized services.
"Justice and Peace" concludes with a note of hope, arising from the fact that people are no longer passive victims of misrule but begin to ask administrators how they manage public affairs. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 10/12/2014)
