AMERICA/MEXICO – Young man dies to obtain justice

Tuesday, 9 December 2014

San Cristobal de Las Casas (Agenzia Fides) – A sad" and "desperate act": said Bishop Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel of the diocese of San Cristóbal de Las Casas (Chiapas - Mexico), referring to the tragic gesture of a young man of 21, who died on 5 December after setting fire to himself to obtain the release of his uncle arrested and detained in the prison of El Amate.
A report sent to Fides says that during the Mass on Sunday 7 December, the Bishop said: "it was a desperate decision. I am no one to judge but it is most concerning that very often trials are irregular. We see people sent to prison for crimes not committed, or even for their social commitment. We have since learned that the young man’s uncle has been released. But things cannot be allowed to go this far. Justice must be justice and this tragedy should make everyone reflect ".
