AFRICA/KENYA – Bishop of Kakamega resigns, successor appointed

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – The Holy Father, Pope Francis, on 5 December 2014, accepted the renunciation of the pastoral government of the diocese of Kakamega (Kenya), presented by Bishop Philip Sulumeti, in conformity with the Code of Canon Law, can. 401 § 1. The Holy Father has appointed Bishop of the diocese of Kakamega (Kenya) Rev. Joseph Obanyi Sagwe, parish priest at the Cathedral and Vicar General of the diocese of Kisii.
The new Bishop was born in 1967 at Kebiro, diocese of Kisii. After primary and secondary school he studied Philosophy at St. Augustine major seminary in Mbaga (1990-1991), and Theology at St. Thomas Aquinas major seminary in Nairobi (1992-1995). He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Kisii on 25 October 1996. Since his ordination he served as follows:1996-1999: Parish Vicar and diocesan coordinator for pastoral activity; 1999-2004: Studies at the Pontifical Lateran University; since 2004: parish priest at the cathedral; since 2005: Vicar General of the diocese Kisii.
