AMERICA/MEXICO - From the first Sunday of Advent: Twelve Days of Prayer for Peace

Friday, 28 November 2014

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of Mexico invite to pray and work for peace in the country. The statement of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, also sent to Agenzia Fides, entitled "Let us pray and work for peace", is being distributed while the country is experiencing a situation of serious tension and crisis.
"Our country is in crisis. This hurts us and affects us all. Inequality, injustice, corruption, impunity, complicity and indifference have made us plunge into violence, fear and despair". For these reasons, the Bishops propose that from November 30 to December 12, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, all Mexicans unite in prayer for peace in the country. On the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe the Holy Father will celebrate a Holy Mass for Latin America in the Vatican Basilica.
Demonstrations against the government and local authorities have increased since the discovery of the involvement of the mayor and other authorities for Ayotzinapa (see Fides 10/11/2014) regarding the 43 missing students. In recent days there have been demonstrations in the capital, with a substantial number of students and delegations from all over the country. The demand for peace and non-violence expressed by all participants in front of the government building in the capital is impressive. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 28/11/2014)
