AMERICA/MEXICO - Mexican Bishops: "We do not want more blood, people killed or who disappear ... Enough!"

Thursday, 13 November 2014

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - The 98th Plenary Assembly of the Bishops' Conference of Mexico (CEM) is being held from 10 to 14 November, which has the aim to "listen to God speaking to us through His Word and the events that we are living, to offer the people of God and all men and women of good will, the guidelines that flow from the Gospel", says the note sent to Agenzia Fides by CEM.
Although the central theme of the Assembly, chosen long ago, is "Encounter, witness and dialogue in the digital continent; towards a culture of encounter", the Bishops issued an urgent message of the Assembly, sent to Fides, with the eloquent title ¡¡BASTA YA !! that launches an appeal to stop the violence that the country is experiencing.
"We Bishops of Mexico say: Enough! We do not want more blood. We do not want more deaths. We do not want more people who disappear. We do not want more pain and even more shame. As Mexicans we share the pain and suffering of the families whose children were killed or disappeared in Iguala, in Tlatlaya, and other thousands of anonymous victims in various regions of our country. We join the widespread cry for a Mexico where truth and justice cause a profound transformation of the institutional, legal and political organization, in order to ensure that events like these are not repeated again".
The Bishops fear the uncontrolled response of the people and groups against the police. That is why they launch a warning: "We are living a critical moment. True democracy that guarantees the strengthening of institutions, law enforcement, education, work and safety of the new generations, to whom we must not deny a decent future, are at stake".
The message ends by inviting us to celebrate on December 12, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a Day dedicated to peace in the country. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 13/11/2014)
