AMERICA/GUATEMALA - To strengthen missionary commitment in spite of violence in the country and people's indifference

Chimaltenango (Agenzia Fides) - From November 7 to 9 more than 2000 and 500 people from 14 ecclesiastical jurisdictions of the country, gave birth to the fourth Missionary Congress of Guatemala (COMGUA) in the city of Chimaltenango, sponsored by the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) and the diocese of Sololá-Chimaltenango. Its main purpose was to strengthen missionary commitment in Guatemala pervaded by violence and people’s indifference.
"The mission, a counter-cultural option", said the first part of the final document, sent to Agenzia Fides, which covers the great difficulty of living the mission as a community option against an individualistic and selfish society. "We are sitting on the shore and the suburbs scare us, but we have to go out and become missionaries", says the document, which continues: "the slogan of the Congress invites us to 'fix our eyes on Jesus'. We have become aware of the need to turn to Jesus and to his message".
"Driven by a sincere desire of permanent, personal and pastoral conversion, we prayed Jesus: so that the Church of Guatemala breaks with the old patterns of the past; is not afraid of the renewing power of the Spirit, which opens new horizons to our mission and thus makes us reach many geographical and existential suburbs that sometimes we are afraid to approach".
"With the help of Pope Francis, we realized that many of our church structures serve only to receive, and not 'to go forth' ... so we have to continue the Continental Mission with this vision, this is our task now", stresses the final document. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 12/11/2014)
