AFRICA/CONGO DR - The debate on the constitutional reform creates a power vacuum and emphasizes the political instability

Monday, 27 October 2014

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - "The discussion on a possible revision of the Constitution creates a vacuum and instability in the political life of the Country and distances the same Congolese political class from the real life of the Country", says Peace Network for Congo, in a note sent to Fides on the debate on the revision of the Constitution to allow President Joseph Kabila to run for a third term in the 2016 elections.
The Congolese Bishops are contrary to the constitutional amendment (see Fides 17/09/2014), causing a reaction on behalf of the so-called "young Catholics" who have committed some acts of intimidation against the Church (see Fides 04/10/2014).
"The real debate should be on the real problems of the people: education, health, security, disarmament of armed groups, work, infrastructure (roads, airports, drinking water, electricity, ...), natural resources, the functioning of justice and public administration, freedom of press and expression, respect for human rights, political pluralism, the organization of transparent and credible elections", said the Network for Peace in Congo.
"The majority and opposition seem to care almost exclusively of power, the first to keep it and the second to conquer it" says the statement.
"By focusing on issues of power, the political class in general and State institutions in particular, including the Government and Parliament, leave the Country in a political vacuum where many unscrupulous people, including leaders of armed groups, officers, soldiers, politicians and private citizens take advantage, in order to assert their private interests at the expense of the population", the statement concludes.
