AMERICA/MEXICO - "Never accept violence as a solution", warns Mgr. Lona Reyes who proposes a prayer campaign

Wednesday, 15 October 2014

Oaxaca (Agenzia Fides) - Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Tehuantepec (Oaxaca, Mexico), His Exc. Mgr. Arturo Lona Reyes, asked the Bishops of the whole country to hold special prayer days after the massacre of Iguala (in Guerrero), because "the problem of violence is devastating us". In a public letter sent to the Bishop of Saltillo, His Exc. Mgr. Raúl Vera López, Mgr. Lona Reyes expresses his concern, and warns, "we must never accept violence as a solution to the problem, but we must recognize that the solution must be a path of peace, fruit of justice and love".
The voice of Mgr. Lona Reyes joins those of Catholic leaders who demand peace and justice after the tragic events in Iguala (see Fides 10/10/2014). In the note sent to Fides, the Bishop emeritus of Tehuantepec deplores the massacre of students in Iguala and the disappearance of 43 students in Ayotzinapa. At the same time invites everyone to react recalling the words of Martin Luther King: "I am not worried about the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people".
Mgr. Lona Reyes concludes his letter to the Bishop of Saltillo with a request to hold a prayer campaign at a national level. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 15/10/2014)
