AMERICA/MEXICO - Bishops on the Iguala case: "clarify what happened, the truth is the path to justice"

Tuesday, 14 October 2014

Acapulco (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of the dioceses that constitute the ecclesiastical province of Acapulco (Tlapa, Ciudad Altamirano, Chilpancingo - Chilapa and Acapulco) have expressed their deep concern with regards to the "Iguala case " (see Fides 10/10/2014) after the discovery of clandestine graves in the vicinity of this location.
"As attentive Pastors towards our people, we have always rejected violent actions committed by any person or group. Now we are amazed and concerned about the way the police behaved in this case. We want to express our pain both for the students who died and for those missing, in addition to our disapproval of how the police behaved", said the statement sent to Fides Agency, published these days, with the date of October 2.
"It is time to fully assume one’s responsibilities with regards to violence and insecurity - the Bishops write - and in the case of Iguala, we urge the authorities to fully clarify the painful events that happened, because the truth is the path to justice and reconciliation".
The Bishop of Zacatecas, His Exc. Mgr. Sigifredo Noriega Barceló, after Mass, on October 12, stated that "impunity is a problem that affects our Country", and urged the federal authorities to resolve the case promptly because "Mexicans are waiting for justice". (CE) (Agenzia Fides 14/10/2014)
