ASIA - China, India, Bangladesh and Vietnam on the blacklist of child exploitation in the textile sector

New Delhi (Agenzia Fides) - The textile industry in China, India, Bangladesh and Vietnam continues to be on the blacklist for the exploitation of minors. In all, 25 Countries violate international standards for jobs in the textile and clothing sector. Cotton collection, weaving and packaging of clothing are the activities that mostly violate the international standard with regards to workers' rights, which prohibits child labor and forced labor. This is what is said in a report released by the Department of Labour of the Government of the United States, Findings on the Worst Forms of Child Labor. China continues to exploit minors in the cotton and textile industries.
India remains under the spotlight after confirming that it continues to recruit child labor in sectors such as footwear, clothing, leather and silk fabrics. Bangladesh uses children for footwear, leather and textiles, while Vietnam continues to exploit them for clothes. The worst form of child exploitation is in the cotton field. The report also states that many children are exploited in the cotton fields in Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali and Zambia. Argentina and Brazil, are also in the black list for the packaging of clothing. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 13/10/2014)
