AMERICA/EL SALVADOR - The Church welcomes the initiative of the Council of National Security

Tuesday, 7 October 2014

San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) - Mgr. Gregorio Rosa Chavez, auxiliary Bishop of San Salvador, expressed himself with regards to the establishment of the "National Council for the safety of citizens". As a whole, the Bishop said speaking after Sunday Mass, October 5, we welcome the initiative, despite the fact that some have doubts and others are confident, however, the road will not be easy.
"It is a pluralistic organization, of permanent, independent and inclusive consensus and of dialogue. It is autonomous but coordinated with the government - said the Bishop -. We did something amazing when we were able to put an end to the war through dialogue and consultation, why not repeat this experience? We have the protagonists, and they can make this miracle possible".
The local media have been talking about the creation of a "Consejo Nacional de Seguridad Ciudadana" for some time, but only in the last few days, the support of international organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations Programme Development Programme (UNDP) was confirmed. As reported in the statement sent to Fides Agency from a local source, for Mgr. Rosa Chavez international recognition is important because it also involves support through funding, which many times is what slows or stops the process.
The Bishop has appealed to all social groups for the success of the initiative, recognizing that the big news is the participation of entrepreneurs: "Private enterprise has to provide jobs for people who have been marginalized, it allows to save young people who are steeped in violence. "The gangs present in El Salvador since March 2012 have been engaged in a truce (see Fides 15/05/2013), which initially reduced the average number of homicides per day from 14 to 5. However, since January 2014 the number of victims has been on the rise, reaching 10 per day. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 07/10/2014)
