AFRICA/CONGO DR - Violence in the areas that the army has declared "free" from the guerrillas continue

Monday, 6 October 2014

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - The Ugandan guerrillas of the ADF-Nalu continue to sow terror among the population in the territory of Beni, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This was revealed in a statement sent to Fides Agency by civil society in North Kivu.
According to the document, the guerrillas operate in areas declared "safe" by the regular Congolese army, that therefore reduced the presence of its troops in those areas.
The ADF-Nalu is a guerrilla group born from the union of the two previous movements fighting against the Ugandan government, the Allied Democratic Forces and the National Army for the Liberation of Uganda. In fact, the ADF-Nalu more than fighting against the army in the territory of Uganda against the army of Kampala, has for a long time installed in North Kivu Congolese and, like other similar groups present in eastern DRC, is dedicated to the extortion of the civil population and the illegal exploitation of Congolese natural resources. This group is accused of the kidnapping of more than 600 civilians, among whom 3 Assumptionist fathers (Augustinians of the Assumption) of Congolese nationality, Jean-Pierre Ndulani, Anselme Wasikundi and Edmond Bamutute, who disappeared on the evening of October 19, 2012 from their parish Notre-Dame des Pauvres of Mbau, 22 km from Beni (see Fides 22/10/2012).
