AMERICA/PERU - How to prevent child labor and ensure adequate opportunities for growth

Lima (Agenzia Fides) - "Tierra de Niños" is the name of an organization established in Peru with the aim of offering aid to families and in the educational and social field so that boys, girls and adolescents acquire self-confidence, a sense of autonomy, participation, and are given the opportunity to defend their rights and to become socially active. The NGO takes care of 2398 children and adolescents in situations at risk of exploitation for labor, 671 in Villa el Salvador, 1128 in Apurímac and 599 in Cajamarca. The action lines are oriented to contribute to equality of opportunity in the access to school for children and adolescents who work or who are at risk. They are also aimed at improving skills, levels of learning and the personal development of students enrolled in the program. The children receive assistance from the entire educational community and a good collaboration with parents has been established, who are starting to understand that the place for children is school.
