AMERICA/DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - Public opinion divided on the request for the withdrawal of UNHCR from the country

Tuesday, 23 September 2014

Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) - The news that the Dominican Republic will ask the United Nations to withdraw its Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from the country and its representative, Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, because he accused the country of not accepting Haitians, is dividing the Dominican public opinion.
Legislators and leftist movements in fact continue to express their disagreement regarding the withdrawal of UNHCR, describing it as improvised, while denouncing the illiteracy of members of the Dominican government. Other MPs have confirmed the processing of a document that, according to the note sent to Fides, will be presented to the UN in tomorrow’s session. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 23/2014)
