AMERICA/EL SALVADOR - Contribution of the Church for a monument to reconciliation, which inspires to seek peace

Thursday, 11 September 2014

San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) - Thirty-three boxes full of unused keys were handed over yesterday by the Archdiocese of San Salvador to the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) to build a monument to Reconciliation, intended to commemorate the Peace Accords signed in 1992.
The donation is a contribution of the Catholic faithful gathered in parishes around the country. "The Catholic Church is an institution that promotes reconciliation, so we believe that this campaign, initiated and conducted by the MOP, is an opportunity to involve all the people of El Salvador to contribute to this initiative", said Mgr. Rafael Urrutia, Chancellor of the Archdiocese, in the note sent to Fides Agency.
The Minister in charge of this campaign, Gerson Martinez, said: "With what we have received, it seems that the goal of 13 tons has been reached". With the slogan "Give us your keys for Reconciliation", the Ministry had launched on April 23, a campaign to collect unused keys in public and private organizations (later extended to schools, churches and other Catholic centers) in order to build a bronze monument. Martinez said yesterday that the idea is to finish the building next January, the date when the agreements were signed, however, there is still no date for the inauguration. According to the promoters, this work aims to be the visible symbol of the democratic path of the country and national development. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 11/09/2014)
