ASIA/PAKISTAN - Postponed until October 16 next hearing for the Asia Bibi appeal

Tuesday, 9 September 2014

Lahore (Agenzia Fides) – In a hearing this morning lasting only a few minutes, the High Court of Lahore, Judge Anwar Ul Haq adjourned the Asia Bibi appeal, postponing it 16 October, Fides was informed by the lawyers of Ms Asia Bibi, S.K. Chaudry and Sardar Mushtaq Gill. The lawyers say “the Court granted one last possibility to the counterpart, since for the umpteenth their lawyer time was absent”. At the next hearing the lawyers will present their written “final argumentation”. On the basis of the latter thr judge will reflect and pass sentence. The case would therefore appear to be released. Gill explains to Fides: “In June we presented a special instance to the High Court, appealing to articles which oblige to Court to examine the case and pass a judgement. The case of Asia will have to be heard. We trust that, examination of the facts of the case, will prove that Asia is not guilty. The only fear is possible negative influence or pressure on the judges on the part of the extremists. But Judge Anwar Ul Haq as a person is correct and highly esteemed. We confide in the good faith and independence of the magistracy”. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 9/9/2014)
