AFRICA/MOZAMBIQUE – Peace agreement signed in view of October elections

Saturday, 6 September 2014

Maputo (Agenzia Fides) – A peace agreement signed yesterday 5 September in Maputo, has put and end to almost two years of “low profile” conflict between government forces and former Renamo guerrillas (Resistenza Nazionale Mozambique). The accord was signed by the president of Mozambique, Armando Guebuza, and the Renamo leader, Afonso Dhlakama, who travelled to Maputo from his base in the Gorongoza forest where he withdrew about two years ago in protest against the policy of the government. Days ago Dhlakama received a joint delegation from the Italian government and the Sant’Egidio Community (see Fides 2/9/2014), both of whom made a decisive contribution towards achieving the peace agreement reached in 1992 to end the civil war which immediately followed Mozambique’s independence from Portugal in 1975. The latest agreement geared towards presidential and parliamentary elections in October, entails the integration of Renamo combatants into the police force and the army and a more equal distribution of the nation’s resources and wealth.
