ASIA/INDIA - May the Year of Consecrated Life become a ‘lived reality’

Thursday, 4 September 2014

Bangalore (Agenzia Fides) – Religious men and women in India are working to prepare and organise the Year of Consecrated Life – announced by Pope Francis, which is to open on 30 November 2014,– that it may truly be “lived reality”. Religious congregations in various parts of India are attending seminars and meetings to reflect and decide on “how to live the Year of Consecrated Life with modalities and concrete applications in the prospect of being truly religious men and women who profess, live and give witness to authentic faith”, we read in a report by Fr. Xavier Manavath, Episcopal Vicar for Religious in the archdiocese of Bangalore.
According to Fr. Sagaya John Nathan, director of the National Biblical, Catechetical and Liturgical Centre of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, “this is an opportunity to prepare for the Year of Consecrated Life so religious may become fire which illumines all hearts ”. A preparatory paper in circulation among India’s Religious indicates the challenges facing consecrated life in India. Prepared by Brother Mani Mekkunnel, former national secretary of the Conference of Religious in India (CRI), the text, with the title “Consecrated Life from a Brother/Sisterhood perspective” highlights the obstacles, hopes and possible fields of commitment’ and will serve as a road map to help re-model the figure of Catholic religious men and women in India.
