ASIA/HOLY LAND - Caritas Jerusalem: in Gaza 400,000 children need psychological care

Thursday, 4 September 2014

Jerusalem (Agenzia Fides) – In Gaza, where still in place is the ceasefire which ended operation Protective Edge launched by the Israeli government and the rocket firing by Hamas militants, now 400,000 children and young adults need psychological care to alleviate the effects of the last three conflicts which affected the people of Gaza in the past six years. This is affirmed by Caritas Jerusalem, quoting United Nations sources, in the latest informative report on its activity. “Boys and girls – we read in the dossier, a copy was sent to Fides – represent the part of the population which suffers most the consequences of armed conflict. The majority experience the separation of families and develop a pessimistic vision of life ”.
Psychological assistance to help boys and girls overcome the traumatic consequences of armed warfare represents one of the principal fields of action promoted by Caritas Jerusalem to help the people of Gaza. Since 22 August Caritas Jerusalem psycho-social team has been at work – with the help of numerous volunteers – in districts and buildings where most refugees are to be found, organising individual and group activities for boys and girls, helping them give vent, in non destructive ways, to anger and sense of oppression accumulated during the conflict.
