AMERICA/BOLIVIA – Catholic Bishops of Bolivia and Peru take communications course “For a culture of encounter”

Thursday, 4 September 2014

Cochabamba (Agenzia Fides) – Today is the final day of a Seminar on Communications for Bishops of the Bolivarian region which brought together 23 Bishops of Bolivia and 13 Bishops from Peru, for reflection and discussion on the issue: “Communications at the service of an authentic Culture of Encounter”. Organised jointly by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications and the Council of Latin American Catholic Bishops’ Conferences (CELAM), the Seminar was held in Cochabamba and started on 1 September.
According to information sent to Fides, the purpose of the seminar was to enhance communion and collegiality among the bishops and examine, with the help of experts in the field, the new spaces of communications and new social scenarios to which the Church today is called to carry the message of the Gospel. “It is not a question of closing our Catholic newspapers and other traditional means of communications – Archbishop Claudio M. Celli, President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications said in his intervention – instead it is a matter of verifying to what extent we are communicating our message and above all to young people. Very often our media are directed to the fish already inside the aquarium, without considering that the majority are not. Our dilemma is: are we ready for what is to come, given the breath-taking speed of technological and culture change? How are we preparing to ensure the Church is able to communicate, that is, to dialogue, with this world? ”. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 04/09/2014)
