ASIA/INDIA – Floods in Orissa: Caritas appeal for the victims

Wednesday, 3 September 2014

Cuttack (Agenzia Fides) A serious humanitarian situation threatens more than 3,5 million people. It is urgent to launch a programme of emergency aid to help the flood victims in Orissa: Caritas India launches through Fides this appeal, following serious flooding in this east Indian state this past Summer of 2014. Besides direct impact on the lives of millions of homeless, observers are also highly concerned about the damaged caused: floods ruined harvests and killed livestock across hundreds of hectares of agricultural land. “This will have a long term impact on subsistence for families and farming jobs in Orissa” says Caritas India.
The alarm was signalled to the Rome based Caritas Internationalis which immediately launched an emergency appeal to help the affected millions. The aim is to collect 768,000 Euro, in aid of millions whose homes and belongings are under water. The eighth months aid programme organised by Caritas, will go to the more than 47,000 displaced persons in the worst hit districts of Jajpur, Cuttack, Bhadrak and Kendrapara, to help the local people survive the effects of the floods. The programme will repair homes, provide temporary shelter and improve sanitary hygiene conditions. It also intends to train farmers in new agricultural methods, supply farming equipment, seeds and livestock to improve future financial stability. The programmes also includes training in flood prevention measures and in emergency response to possible future floods. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 3/9/2014)
