AMERICA/ARGENTINA – The Month of the Bible, ideal context for giving new impulse to the evangelising mission of the Church

La Rioja (Agenzia Fides) – “For the Catholic Church every year September is the Month of the Bible. It is an exceptional opportunity to reflect on our encounter with Jesus the Lord, … the month of September is a time to give new impulse to the Church’s evangelising mission”. The Bishop of the diocese of La Rioja, Bishop Daniel Colombo, writes this in his pastoral letter for the occasion of the Month of the Bible, which is celebrated with different initiatives in various countries of Latin America.
“All our evangelization is based on the Word of God, heard, meditated, lived, celebrated and witnessed – the Bishop continues in the Letter, a copy of which was sent to Fides -. Sacred Scripture is the source of evangelization. It is necessary to continually listen to the Word of God and learn. The Church cannot evangelise unless she lets herself be continually evangelised”. Mgr. Colombo also mentions the diocesan Catechetical Year “it is important to recall the necessity to start from the Word of God in order to animate our liturgies and all our pastoral life”. The Catechetical itinerary for the sacraments of Christian Initiation offers a great opportunity because “it helps children and their parents become familiar with the Bible, with its Books and Letters, and recognise it as nourishment for the faith lived in the family”.
The Bishops asks parishes and communities to organise Bible Meetings to facilitate for all the encounter with the Word, and he concludes: “Evangelisation requires familiarity with the Word of God, and this means that dioceses, parishes and all Catholic organisations must promote serious and ongoing study of the Bible as well as regular prayerful reading of the Sacred Scriptures as individuals and as communities”.
