AFRICA/SUDAN - Talks between Sudan and South Sudan have been postponed

Thursday, 14 February 2013

Khartoum (Agenzia Fides) - Talks between Sudan and South Sudan that were to open on February 13 in Addis Ababa have been posponed. The meeting was to reach an agreement for the creation of a demilitarized zone on the border between the two Countries.
The authorities in Juba accused Khartoum of amassing troops along the common borders (see Fides 13/02/2013). Accusation that Sudan has rejected. "There is no truth to the accusations by South Sudan that we are amassing troops along the border area and there are no armed battles between us and them," said a military spokesman in Khartoum, but there are existing "tribal interactions" that caused recent clashes in the area.
The spokesman also downplayed reports that South Sudan deployed troops to the borders, stating that they have not monitored anything unusual. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 14/02/2013)
