AFRICA/KENYA - New attack in Dadaab where almost 400,000 Somali refugees live

Tuesday, 6 December 2011

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - A police officer was killed and three others were seriously injured in the explosion of a bomb in the Ifo refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya, bordering Somalia. The different camps in Dadaab are home to the largest community of Somali refugees in the world, about 400,000 people. The attack was attributed to the Somali fundamentalists (Shabab), in response to the military operation conducted by Kenyan troops in southern Somalia.
The military in Nairobi entered the Somali territory after a series of foreign citizen kidnappings committed in Kenya by Somali bandits or by the Shabab themselves. Among them are also two Spanish humanitarian aid workers kidnapped in Dadaab. According to Shabelle Media Network, the two women, held in the district of Afgoye (30 km from Mogadishu) seem to be in the hands of their original kidnappers and transferred to a group of Shabab.
