Hargeisa (Agenzia Fides) - For the first time since the declaration of independence from the rest of the country, a delegation from the Republic of Somaliland has recently intervened in favor of 9 000 displaced families due to the drought in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu. "We plan to distribute food to 9 000 households and medicines in 4 hospitals", said the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Somaliland. "The food distribution will serve the needs of a month". The government of Somaliland had announced at the end of August its intervention in support of Somalia hit by famine and drought in most regions of the Centre and the South. About 700 thousand dollars were collected, thanks to the donations of the people and the government of Somaliland. The money was divided in two delegations:, one is in Mogadishu engaged in the distribution of food aid, while the other will go to the refugee camps in Dadaab, in Kenya. Somaliland, which lies north of the country, is a former British protectorate which joined Italian Somaliland to form the Republic of Somalia in 1960. In 1991 the north-western region declared its independence from the rest of Somalia achieving stability and peace in Mogadishu completely unknown. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 04/10/2011)
