ASIA/MYANMAR - Burmese Catholic community's solidarity with Japan

Tuesday, 15 March 2011

Yangon (Agenzia Fides) – The Burmese people, who suffered from Cyclone Nargis in 2008, hope to show their closeness and solidarity with the Japanese victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami. The Catholic Church in Myanmar advises Fides that they have allocated 20 March as a special day dedicated to the Japanese.
Archbishop Charles Bo of Yangon, in agreement with the other Bishops of the nation, invited all parishes to offer Holy Mass on 20 March in memory of the victims and take up a special collection that through 'Karuna' (Caritas Myanmar) will be sent to Caritas Japan, which is carrying out humanitarian aid.
The tragedy of Cyclone Nargis, says a local Fides source, “has served to bring out a sense of harmony and unity, beyond any social or religious distinction. We hope and believe that this will be the experience of the Japanese people, whom we entrust to divine Providence.” (PA) (Agenzia Fides 15/3/2011)
