Islamabad (Agenzia Fides) – Civil society in Pakistan is appealing to the Supreme Court to block Islamic extremists, who are rampant at all levels, and to protect the rule of the rights and constitutional freedoms of all citizens.
As explained to Fides, the network, “Citizens for democracy”, sent a letter to the President of the Supreme Court to intervene with with a measure, “its motion” (meaning “at its own initiative”, which is in its powers) to “prevent violations of the fundamental rights of the person”, and to ensure that “no citizen is denied life or liberty, in compliance with the law”, as stated in Article 9 of the Constitution. The network unites a vast movement of associations from every religious extraction and matrix, among which is the “Justice and Peace” Commission of the Bishops of Pakistan, the “Commission for Human Rights in Pakistan” and also Muslim organisations.
The appeal comes after threats and incitement to murder openly spread by the leaders of the Islamic network Tehrik Tahaffuz Namoos-i-Risalat (“Alliance to defend the honour of the Prophet”), who have praised the killer of the Governor of Punjab, encouraged militants to kill Bibi Asia and all those who would like to change the law on blasphemy.
The letter, sent to Fides, notes that hatred and murder cannot be incited with impunity, without suffering any legal consequences. For this reason, there are calls for an investigation and action by the Supreme Court, a body which has the duty to protect the law of the Country.
In addition, organizations such as the Asian Human Rights Commission also request the Pakistani Government to adopt urgent measures against extremists. A statement sent to Fides said: “The inaction of the Government shows weakness and helplessness in the face of those who mock the law.” This empowers “those who believe they control the law at their will and are able to enact justice by themselves. If there is no action taken in view of these serious events, “the government becomes complicit in the spread of intolerance and religious hatred.” (PA) (Agenzia Fides 14/1/2010)
