ASIA/KOREA - New diocese Uijongbu Bishop Joseph Lee Han-Taek appointed first Bishop

Vatican City (Fides Service) - The Holy Father, Pope John Paul II has 24 June 2004, created the diocese of Uijongbu (Korea) with territory taken from the Archdiocese of Seoul rendering it suffragan of the same metropolitan church. The Holy Father has appointed first Bishop of Uijongbu, Bishop Joseph Lee Han-Taek S.I., until now titular Bishop of Tibuzabeto and Auxiliary of Seoul.
The new diocese of Uijongbu will include the towns of Uijongbu, Koyang, Kuri, Namyang, Paju, Tongducho-Yangju e Yeonchin. It will border to the east with the diocese of Chunchon, to the south and south west with the Archdiocese Seoul.
Here is a table showing the situation of both dioceses.

The parish church at Uijongbu, dedicated to the “Sacred Heart of Mary”, will be the Cathedral. The Bishop’s house and diocesan offices will be built on land already purchased. (S.L.) (Agenzia Fides 5/7/2004; Righe 53; Parole 185)
