AMERICA/CHILE - Caritas Santiago celebrates 54th anniversary of foundation

Thursday, 12 August 2010

Santiago (Agenzia Fides) – In the setting of the Continental Mission and the Bicentennial Anniversary of the Nation, Caritas Santiago is celebrating its 54th anniversary and remembering with gratitude the path that they have walked in accompanying the poorest of the poor.
Led by Father Rodrigo Tupper Altamirano, Director of Caritas-Santiago, the main celebration was held Wednesday, August 11 with a Mass in the parish of El Sagrario of the Metropolitan Cathedral and then a cultural action prepared by members of Caritas, where they delivered the "solidarity cookies"- in honor of the Month of Solidarity, which takes place this August - in the Plaza de Armas, with the presence of all members, staff, area coordinators, pastoral workers, friends, and beneficiaries of the programs of the institution.
"It was August 10, 1956 when out of intuition and following the mandate given by the then Cardinal Raúl Silva Henríquez that Caritas Santiago was established in the Archdiocese of Santiago, to bring the balm of hope to all those who for their state of neglect, poverty, suffering, or injustice, no longer had a reason to dream," recalls Father Rodrigo Tupper A.
Father Rodrigo Tupper spoke of what this date means: "Today, we reaffirm our commitment to building a civilization based on love, solidarity, and justice, so that there can be living hope for the poor of our time." (CE) (Agenzia Fides 08/12/2010)
