EUROPE/SPAIN - Monasteries support the missions with a special day of prayer and sacrifice every month

Wednesday, 21 July 2010

Madrid (Agenzia Fides) – The Pontifical Mission Society of St Peter Apostle propose that monasteries of contemplative life might devote one day every month to cooperation with the universal mission of the Church. Given the contemplative character of monastery communities, the principal cooperation in favour of missionary work would be prayer and offering up of personal sacrifices. In the archdiocese of Madrid “ the day of prayer and sacrifice for the missions ” is held on the third Monday of each month and for its promotion the diocesan office of the Society of St Peter sends each month a different "Church on Mission" poster to the different monasteries to announce the initiative. The central act of this special Day is the liturgical celebration, Mass or some other liturgy, in which prayers are said for the Church's universal mission. The celebration can be enriched with the reading of testimony or by a collection, if the faithful are present, the proceeds of which will be sent to support programmes of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS). A Liturgical Handbook especially prepared with helpful suggestions for animating this monthly day of prayer, proposes texts and suggests gestures which can be adapted to the local situation aimed at increasing mission awareness and giving new impulse to spiritual and material cooperation with the missions. The PMS in Madrid provide monasteries with other material: a list of names of the diocesan missionaries, testimony of missionaries, mission magazines and other literature to distribute free of charge … for information see: madrid@omp.es.
