ASIA/CHINA - Promoting community life in the Church: Kai Feng holds first Diocesan Meeting

Kai Feng (Agenzia Fides) – Priestly Ministry and Spirituality, vocations, church administration, evangelisation and the Church's charitable activity were some of the questions discussed at the first Diocesan Meeting of the Kai Feng Diocese, in the province of He Nan. Participants included seminarians, religious and lay Catholics. According to information sent to Fides, during the 4 day meeting, 7 diocesan priests spoke about the situation of the diocese and the social challenges facing the community, and welcomed suggestions for intensifying community life in the Church. The diocese of Kai Feng was formerly a mission entrusted to the PIME missionaries from Italy. It was made a Vicariate Apostolic in 1924 and an archdiocese in 1946, the year of the institution of the Chinese Hierarchy. Today the diocese has about 30,000 faithful assisted by 8 priests and several dozen women religious of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Divine Providence. The major Regional seminary of He Nan province is situated here. Besides pastoral activity and evangelisation, the Church runs Wei Xin Home for the elderly.
