Tuesday, 6 July 2010

Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) – In preparation for the Year of the Laity, the Diocese of Hong Kong opened in 2001, the Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist Group, which belongs to the Diocesan Liturgy Commission, organized the annual meeting of Extraordinary Ministers on "Assessing and Reflecting on Lay Ministry." According to reports from the Kong Ko Bao (the Chinese version of the diocesan bulletin), about 730 people took part in the meeting held recently in the Parish of St. Olga. Fr. Francis Lau Tak Kwong, spiritual director of the Catholic Lay Association of Hong Kong, led a spiritual reflection on lay ministry, stressing that building community and making salvation come alive through service are the main commitments of the laity. "The lay ministry is not a consequence of the shortage of priests,” highlighted the spiritual director. “But the Church's mission is realized through the specific service of the laity in the Church and outside the Church." As part of the meeting, there was also a short training course held and there were awards presented to all those who have performed the service of Extraordinary Minister for 30, 25, 20, 15, and 10 years.
