AFRICA/GUINEA - “Army coups will no longer be possible in Africa” says Guinea's Transition President

Friday, 11 June 2010

Conakry (Agenzia Fides)- "Guinea's army is now the army of the Republic. So we must accept the truth of the vote after the elections on 27 June. We will be subject to the democratically elected President. From now on there will be no more army coups in Africa. In the event of such a coup in any country, an emergency battalion will intervene to restore constitutional order. This decision was reached in Nice”. With this statement the Transition President Republic of Guinea, General Sékouba Konaté, declared the army's loyalty to the country's democratic institution.
President Konaté released the statement on 9 June 2010 during a courtesy visit on the part of a military delegation led by Army Chief of Staff, colonel Nouhou Thiam Konate.
During the 25th France-Africa Summit held in Nice, France at the end of May, a decision was reached to reinforce the capacity of African Union Peace Keeping force. More in detail, France promised to train, between 2010 and 2012, some 12,000 African soldiers involved in AU and UN peace keeping operations. Besides the African Union, other regional political-economic communities (of west Africa, central Africa, etc..), have formed emergency intervention forces to prevent conflict and maintain peace.
On 27 June in Guinea there will be presidential elections, which should lead the country out of a crisis started in December 2008 by a military coup following the death of the country's President Lansana Conté. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 11/6/2010)
