ASIA/INDIA - Thanks to priests, “the impossible becomes possible”

Monday, 31 May 2010

Guwahati (Agenzia Fides) - “Every priest is a gift for humanity, a person acting for the good of the human family, which is the main focus of his life," said Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil of Guwahati, in a comment sent to Fides in view of the conclusion of the Year for Priests. "In the life of a priest, thanks to the presence of God, the impossible becomes possible. A priest brings joy into people's lives, and receives joy from his mission."
Speaking of his priestly vocation, the Archbishop thanked "the presence of his mother, a woman of deep spirituality, who personally knew Sister Alphonsa, who was later canonized,” recalling the atmosphere of the community where he grew up Catholic and valuable assistance of those - primarily priests – who helped him in the process of discernment.
In his priestly ministry, Archbishop Menamparampil said he had to face mainly the task of "reconciling individuals, communities, and ideas," given the context in which he lives in Northeastern India.
Addressing lay people and all people of good will, upon the close of the celebration of the Year for Priests, the Archbishop asks that they "understand the limitations and mistakes of a priest, given his human nature," and referring to the future of vocations states: "One thing is certain: a community that lives, celebrates, and bears witness to a serious and deep faith gives priests to the Church." Vocations are growing, he said, when one examines and reflects on the examples of saints, when one hears and shares in the testimonies of missionaries, when we live the faith in our families.
